Keeping your insurance if you’re not making regular contributions

Man at a cafe

Insurance in super has changed for people who are not actively contributing to their account and for people with an account balance below $6,000.

The Government’s recent reforms to insurance in super aim to protect everyone’s retirement savings by encouraging members to evaluate their insurance cover.

What are the changes?

  • Account balances under $6,000
If you have insurance cover that you didn't elect to receive and your account balance is less than $6,000, you need to tell us you want to keep this cover or we’ll cancel it on 1 April 2020.
  • Not receiving regular contributions
If your account hasn’t received a contribution or rollover for 16 months—regardless of your account balance—you need to tell us you’d like to keep your insurance cover or we’ll cancel it.

If you’re affected by these changes, we’ll contact you directly with more information to help you make an informed decision and to outline how you can stop your cover being cancelled.

Check your cover is right for you

How much insurance you need depends on your current (and future) circumstances. It’s important to regularly review your insurance to ensure it meets your needs. The Insurance needs calculator is a good place to start.

It’s also important to note that if your cover is cancelled, to have cover again in the future you may have to apply and provide health evidence to our insurer.

If you want to change or cancel your cover, log in to your account and go to the Insurance page, or you can complete the Change your insurance cover form (PDF, 96KB).

How to keep your cover

If we’ve recently contacted you about your insurance cover being cancelled because your account balance is under $6,000, you can tell us you’d like to keep your cover by completing our online form.

If you’re not making contributions and/or your account balance is below $6,000 and you’d like to keep your insurance cover, you can also do one of the following before your cover is automatically cancelled:

It’s important to understand

An election to keep your insurance cover when not receiving regular contributions may not apply if your account balance is under $6,000, so your insurance cover may still be at risk of being cancelled. We’ll write to you if you need to make another election to continue your insurance.
